L1 East London Water -Works Company

East London Water-Works Company certificate for £500 of Debenture Stock dated 22nd November 1887. Lightly creased otherwise Very fine.

The East London Water Works Company was established at Old Ford, Bow in 1805, taking water fron the River Lea and took over the Shadwell, West Ham and Hackney Waterworks companies. The Old Ford plant was abandoned due to a cholera epedemic in 1866 and by 1871 the supply was from the Sunbury reservoir at Finsbury. In common with other water supply companies it was taken over when the Metropolitan Water Board was founded in 1902.
