Furst, bronze, 65mm. dia., made in 1817, obv. bust right of Bainbridge in uniform, rev., battle scene between the two ships. EF. Small die flaw to left rim.In Hunt and Roskell case of issue.
This medal is one of a series of 27 medals commemorating American successes during the War of 1812, struck by special resolution of Congress. They were awarded to naval commanders in gold and to their officers in silver. The bronze examples are restrikes but still scarce and desirable..
